This G-Drive is not only beautiful, it’s efficient. This external hard drive is one of the many hard drives G-Technology makes. This is personally my first G-Drive and I’m quite impressed. The drive packs a 7200 RPM drive speed along with a 226 MB/s transfer rate. It comes in a 2TB, 3TB, 4TB, and 6TB version. I purchased the 4TB because it seemed the most optimal for my needs. Depending on the storage size you get, they range from $159.95 to $399.95 on G-Technologies website.
When I first took it out of the box, the first thing I noticed was the weight. It is a bit on the heavy side but at the same time, it gives me the feel of durability. One of the big reasons I bought this drive was because of the sleek aluminium. It matches perfectly with my 2015 MacBook Pro. In fact, I sometimes find myself distracted from my work just staring at this beautiful piece of tech.
As can be seen from the picture above, the drive has an On/Off button, AC power adapter, USB 3.0, and a Kensington lock. To get this drive up and running, all you have to do is plug the AC power adapter into an outlet, plug the USB 3.0 into your computer, and click the black button on the back. This device read my mind when I plugged it into my Mac. That’s because a box popped up asking if I would like to make a Time Machine backup of my computer to the G-Drive. All G-Drives come formatted for a Mac but can easily be reformatted to work with Windows.
Pros:
- Ultra-fast 226 MB/s transfer rate
- 7200 RPM drive
- Made of a durable aluminum body that has a Mac-like finish
- Has rubber grip pads on the bottom to keep firmly on surface
- Has an On/Off button
- Features a Kensington lock to keep it from getting stolen
- Very quiet fan
- Light Indicator on the front
- Very reliable, haven’t had an issue
- Includes all of the necessary cables
- Comes with a 3 year G-Technology warranty
Cons:
- A bit heavy
- Sometimes get’s hot on the top
- It’s not bus-powered
All in all, this drive is a powerhouse. I use it every day to back up my computer with Time Machine, but also use it store photos and other important files. In my opinion, G-Technology by far makes the best external hard drives for the Mac. They’re fast, they come pre-formatted for the Mac, and the aluminum finish matches perfectly. This hard drive is one of the few that I am actually proud to place on top of my desk.
